Cervical Smear Screening

Cervical smear screening, also known as a cervical screening test or Pap smear, is a quick and simple procedure offered to women and people with a cervix, typically between the ages of 25 and 64, to help prevent cervical cancer. The test checks for high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can lead to changes in cervical cells. Early detection through regular screening allows for prompt treatment before abnormal cells can develop into cancer. The procedure is carried out by trained healthcare professionals in a safe and confidential setting, with results usually provided within a few weeks. Attending regular cervical screening appointments is one of the most effective ways to protect your long-term reproductive health.

When you’ll be invited for cervical screening:

Under 25 – Up to 6 months before you turn 25

25 to 49 – Every 3 years

50 to 64 – Every 5 years

65 or older – Only if a recent test was abnormal
